Boddie: What it really looks like to run for office

By C.S. Boddie | Guest Commentary, American Thinker They say all politics is local. I say local politics is a lot of work. Also, it is affected by lying national politicos with lots of money, which is not fair, as well as local volunteers who help or won’t help. I learned all this and more when I supported my husband, Peter, in a run for state representative in Colorado during 2024.  I’d like to offer a few observations. Local politics is still important, and we’re glad Peter ran.  We’re not sorry that we both put in time, effort, and money for the project.  Even though Peter lost — no fun — we still think it was worth doing. Justice: The New York Times fact-checks itself in fumbled fact check of RFK Froot Loops claims

By Tristan Justice | Commentary, The Federalist The New York Times was mocked online for having proved the point the paper was trying to discredit. The New York Times fact-checked itself in an embarrassing attempt to fact-check President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee to lead the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Robert F. Kennedy Jr. In an article published Friday on Kennedy’s crusade to regulate the food industry, the paper inadvertently contradicted its own criticism of a claim by Kennedy related to a popular cereal marketed to children. Daniel: Eventually, you run out of other people’s money

By Bobbie Daniel, Commentary, Rocky Mountain Voice Colorado, long admired for its breathtaking landscapes, vibrant outdoor culture, and once-thriving economy, finds itself at a crossroads. Rising living costs, unaffordable housing, stagnant wages and increasing business closures are eroding the state’s appeal. A state once a beacon of opportunity is now grappling with mounting challenges that jeopardize its economic vitality. Recent data highlights the gravity of the situation. According to the Common Sense Institute (2023), Colorado’s net population growth was a mere 7,236 people, ranking 16th nationally —- a stark contrast to its historic reputation as a magnet for newcomers. The University of Colorado’s Leeds School of Business reported a troubling 22% drop in new business fili...

Madison: Efficiency in government, an oxymoron!

By John Alexander Madison | Guest Commentary, Rocky Mountain Voice A U.S. senator, Chris Coons (D-DE), said again he is “amused” that it will take two billionaires to oversee President-elect Donald Trump’s new Department of Government Efficiency! (D.O.G.E) He is amused that it would take two people to run this new department. But the average American patriot is hardly laughing that it takes $200 billion and 4,400 federal employees to run a useless and inefficient Department of Education. If you ask me, I’d suggest hiring two well-paid people every time we can eliminate 4,400 federal employees from our ever-expanding and bloated federal bureaucracy…one agency or department after another. The fact is these two billionaires won’t be drawing a salary from our federal taxpayer dollars…...

Gaines: You can make a difference by volunteering for a local board or committee

By Cory Gaines | Commentary, Colorado Accountability Project Realigning the main drag through Sterling left a couple parcels of land orphaned.  It wasn't necessarily that they looked worse than they did before -- one of them was a former trailer park where the only vestiges of its former life were bare concrete pads with socketless meter boxes poking up here and there.  The highway realignment didn't make them ugly, it made them uglier:  it left a bit of land whose shape wouldn't be too conducive to anything useful.  Yet another empty patch of dirt on my daily commute. Then, one day, I saw some landscaping happening.  It's since been finished and has really improved the look of what otherwise would've been some awkwardly-shaped frontage.  A city tax paid...

Ganahl: Say ‘NO’ to political flags in our classrooms!

By Heidi Ganahl | Commentary, Rocky Mountain Voice The Durango 9-R School Board is poised to take an alarming step that undermines the values of neutrality and inclusivity our schools should uphold. On Tuesday, the school board plans to vote on a resolution that would officially designate certain political symbols — like the Black Lives Matter and Progress Pride flags — as the district’s own speech. This sleight of hand allows them to avoid the protections of the 1st Amendment, shutting the door on diverse perspectives while granting preferential treatment to one viewpoint. Let’s be clear: this is government-sanctioned discrimination. By rebranding these flags as “compatible with educational goals,” the board is imposing a specific political ideology on our classrooms. This is wro...

Deace: Trump II, this time it’s personnel

By Steve Deace, Commmentary | The Blaze Media It won’t be what you’re used to, it will sometimes make you uncomfortable, and there will almost certainly be some cleanups in aisle 12 along the way. I saw on X that an NBC news reporter described the “general vibe” around Donald Trump’s Cabinet picks as “WTF,” with the appointment of Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) as attorney general earning gasps of “Oh my God.” Can’t say I don’t share that last sentiment in at least some measure. Gaetz running the Justice Department is perhaps the biggest middle finger in the history of American presidential appointments and one far from certain to be approved by a GOP-controlled Senate. McMeekin: Trump should immediately stop federal agencies from hiding documents by needlessly marking them classified

By Sean McMeekin | Commentary, The Federalist Files should be open to the public unless otherwise specified, not secret by default. We the people have a right to know what our government does in our name, and to know our own history. Early in his third presidential campaign, Donald Trump vowed to establish a “Truth and Reconciliation Commission” to “declassify and publish all documents on Deep State spying, censorship, and abuses of power.” The phrase “Truth and Reconciliation” recalls bodies established to investigate abuses by toppled Communist regimes such as East Germany’s, or the former apartheid government of South Africa. The framing suggests that Trump views the entire past decade, from “Russiagate” to the “lawfare” cases entangling himself and his advisers, as the...

Devotional: Embrace the strength of meekness in your bearing

By Drake Hunter | Devotional, Rocky Mountain Voice What does it mean to have good bearing? It's more than just your posture or how you present yourself in a room — though, that matters. At its core, good bearing is about how you carry yourself through life, particularly in the face of challenges. It's about choosing your words wisely, enduring hardships gracefully and learning from the difficulties that come your way. These lessons, drawn from trials, help to shape us into healthier, wiser people. But, good bearing isn’t just for our benefit; it’s also about influencing others for the better through the example we set in our conversations, actions and relationships. Good bearing means carrying yourself with dignity, composure and confidence — especially in the Lord. It's about ...

Caldara: Polis, Dems prefer Trump win Colorado’s electoral votes

By Jon Caldara | Complete Colorado Yet again the voters of Colorado pummeled Donald Trump at the ballot box. He lost here by an audacious 12%. I have a question for the majority of Coloradans who didn’t want him as president: How do you feel about Colorado’s 10 Electoral College votes going to President-elect Trump instead of Vice President Kamala Harris? Voters of our hardcore blue state despise Trump and came out in very large numbers to voice their hatred of the man. And yet, our 10 electoral votes from Colorado will go to…Trump. So, you with Trump Derangement Syndrome, is this what you wanted?
