Aftermath of Pueblo’s homeless encampment and trash clear out, a week later

By Eleanor Sheahan | KOAA News The City of Pueblo and the mayor have received both support and pushback about the way they are trying to clean up the steel city. Last week, the city cleared out trash and homeless camps along Fountain Creek. This clean up has brought forward many concerns over how the city is dealing with homelessness and whether or not the city is providing enough resources. Last week the area from the 8th Street to the 4th Street bridge was cleared out by the city. But people in Pueblo are at odds, some voicing support of this while others say there needs to be more resources for unhoused individuals. It began on Tuesday, September 3rd. That is when city crews began removing trash and homeless camps along Fountain Creek. READ THE FULL STORY AT KOAA NEWS

Lakewood voters to decide on eliminating taxpayer protections in November

By Savana Kascak | Complete Colorado The Lakewood City Council in August referred a measure to the November 5 ballot asking voters to permanently eliminate revenue limitations in place under the Colorado Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights (TABOR). Despite some complicated ballot wording, a yes vote on the measure boils down to an end to refunds of taxes over-collected by the city for good starting in 2026. TABOR is a constitutional amendment that, among other things, limits the growth of local government spending to a reasonable annual rate based on inflation and local economic growth. Excess revenue must be returned to taxpayers unless voters give permission to exceed those limits. The Lakewood measure would allow city government to keep and spend revenue that would otherwise be refun...

Aurora City Council votes to crack down on vehicle registration with impoundments

By Tori Mason | CBS Colorado In a move to enhance safety and enforce vehicle regulations, the Aurora City Council approved an ordinance for impoundment penalties. The measure, which passed with a 6-2 vote, mandates the impoundment of vehicles if a police officer determines the vehicle is being operated by an unlicensed driver, is not properly registered, and lacks insurance.  In July, the Aurora Police Department told CBS Colorado that when a vehicle is pulled over for not having a plate, the driver usually gets a ticket to appear in court. The city says this harsher penalty aims to address growing concerns about unregulated vehicles on city streets. READ THE FULL STORY AT CBS COLORADO

Aurora mayor responds to Trump’s debate reference: “TdA has not ‘taken over’ the city”

By Lanie Lee Cook | Fox 31 News The candidates had not finished responding to the first question of Tuesday night’s debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump before Colorado was brought into the fold. Harris and Trump were asked whether they thought the economy was in a better position than four years ago. Each candidate touted their policy goals in their response, while Trump also used his time to repeat the anti-immigration rhetoric that has often been the centerpiece of his political messaging. Trump claimed that migrants “pouring” into the country were taking jobs and then mentioned Aurora, where reported gang crime in neglected apartment buildings has made national headlines and where officials have noted a presence of the Venezuelan Tren d...

Logan County TABOR issues highlight local concerns: Free State CO talks ranked choice voting

By Cory Gaines | Colorado Accountability Project The deadline to get local ballot issues on your local ballot passed recently.  As such I called the Logan County Clerk and Recorder's Office to see about anything on the ballot in Logan County. There is a measure in the City of Sterling, CO There is a measure in Merino, CO There is a measure in Crook, CO There is a measure in the Frenchman Re-3 District (Fleming, CO schools). Why call and ask?  The answer is simple.  You as a citizen have a right to provide a pro or con statement on any local ballot issues for the taxing district you reside in.  You should take advantage of this right because speaking up on local issues can have a huge effect, especially compared to statewide issues.  READ THE FULL STORY AT THE COLO...
