‘Swing State’ election officials were ready for almost anything. Just not this.

By John Sakellariadis, Liz Crampton and Jessica Piper | Politico The Category 4 hurricane that ripped through the eastern seaboard is scrambling election preparations in some of the country’s top battlegrounds — adding to the troubles of administering the vote amid conspiracy theories and toxic partisan divides. The swing states of Georgia and North Carolina were among the most heavily affected by Hurricane Helene, which flooded towns, destroyed buildings, took out power and cell service and forced widespread road closures, with a death toll that has already ticked above 200. The upturning of everyday life has also introduced unanticipated disruptions into the nuts-and-bolts of running a high-stakes presidential election. Now, election officials are racing to ensure storm-batter...

Tropical Storm Milton hits hurricane force as it bears down on Florida with mass evacuations predicted

By Simon Kent | Breitbart Storm Milton strengthened from a major tropical disturbance into a Category 3 hurricane early on Monday morning, increasing the threat to Florida’s west coast, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said in a special alert. The state is now gearing up for what could be its biggest mass evacuation in seven years as the rain-sodden behemoth heads toward major population centers including Tampa and Orlando. “While it is too soon to specify the exact magnitude and location of the greatest impacts, there is an increasing risk of life-threatening storm surge and damaging winds for portions of the west coast of the Florida Peninsula beginning Tuesday night or early Wednesday,” the NHC said in a forecast discussion. The NHC also warned of “5 to 8 inches” of rainf...

Takeaways from AP’s report on affordable housing disappearing across the U.S.

By JESSE BEDAYN and ARUSHI GUPTA  | Fox 31 via the AP While Americans continue to struggle under unrelentingly high rents, as many as 223,000 affordable housing units across the U.S. could disappear in the next five years alone. It leaves low-income tenants facing protracted eviction battles, scrambling to pay a two-fold rent increase or more, or shunted back into a housing market where costs can easily eat half a paycheck. Those affordable housing units were built with the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit, or LIHTC, a federal program launched in 1987 that provides tax credits to developers in exchange for keeping rents low. It has pumped out 3.6 million units nationwide, and its expansion is now central to Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris’ housing plan to build 3 m...

‘This thing is a long way from decided’: Carville predicts one candidate will carry swing states

By Zach LaChance | Washington Examiner Democratic strategist James Carville predicted that the swing states in the 2024 election will nearly all go to one candidate, rather than either former President Donald Trump or Vice President Kamala Harris narrowly winning the majority of them. Speaking on CNN, Carville was asked, “If it’s the economy, stupid,” why Harris isn’t ahead in the presidential race after recent positive economic news, including declining inflation and a stronger-than-expected jobs report. “You know, she’s slightly ahead. It’s not the election. These things tend to break one way or the other at the end. There’s seven swing states. The least likely result is they break 4-3. But I can’t stop the commentariat from saying it’s going to be ...

Supreme Court docket includes ghost guns, a capital case and transgender rights

By Lindsay Whitehurst | CBS 11 News via the AP The Supreme Court is taking the bench again on Monday, ready to hear cases on ghost guns, a death sentence and transgender rights. The docket doesn’t have quite as many blockbuster cases on its docket as it did last term, when its rulings included an opinion granting broad immunity to former president Donald Trump. Still, it’s possible that the conservative-majority court could yet be asked to intervene in election disputes after the ballots are cast in November. READ THE FULL STORY AT CBS 11 NEWS

One-year anniversary of Oct. 7 attacks arrives with lasting trauma for Israelis, American Jews

By Danielle Wallace | Fox News Life in Israel one year after the Oct. 7, 2023, terrorist attacks is far from a return to normal, as one expert explained to Fox News Digital what it's like dealing with the psychological fallout of the massacre while living near an active war zone – and even the lasting consequences for American Jews 12 months later. Dr. David Fox, director of crisis and trauma services for Chai Lifeline International, a Jewish nonprofit and network supporting families living with illness or loss, said he’s traveled to Israel multiple times over the last year to meet with hostages' families and consult with survivors' families on the ground.  "I think Oct. 7 will remain seared into the consciousness of Jews and of Israelis," Fox told Fox News Digital. "It'...

Pennsylvania set voter registration site to go dark same day as Oct. 5 Butler rally

By Emma Colton  | Fox News Conservatives blasted Pennsylvania's Department of State this month for scheduling a system maintenance update to its voter registration website the same day former President Trump returned to Butler, where he survived an assassination attempt in July. The operation would have taken the site offline for several hours during the same time frame the Trump campaign expected to register voters. The department, however, moved the window of time for maintenance to later in the night amid an early outcry. "The PA State Department voter registration website will be unavailable on Saturday, October 5th, the day that President Trump will be triumphantly returning to the site of the assassination attempt in Butler County, PA. W/ all eyes on PA, the site w...

Internet roasts Politico for claiming Vance’s beard shows ‘toxic masculinity’ while Walz’s eyes show ‘passion’

By Carmen Schober | Evie After JD Vance stole the show on Tuesday, Politico scrambled to help out Harris-Walz, and the best they could come up with was turning Vance's beard into a weapon of patriarchal terror. “One of the first bits of nonverbal communication to appear in the debate was on JD Vance’s face: his beard," they wrote. "As Politico Magazine has noted before, Vance is the first White House wannabe to wear facial hair in 80 years. Our appearance is fundamental to our body language, and research indicates that voters see beards as (surprise, surprise) more masculine. That can be positive to some, reading as strength and competence. But to others, especially women, it can be negative, conveying aggression and opposition to feminist ideals." READ THE FU...
