Matveyuk: Will our children live the American dream?

By Sergei Matveyuk | Commentary, Rocky Mountain Voice The days my children were born are among the best of my life. Like most parents, I want my children to live productive lives, be self-sufficient and pursue what makes them happy. Forty years ago, these simple hopes seemed impossible.  I grew up in a Marxist country where hope was nearly nonexistent. My grandfather’s farm, flour mill and last cow were taken by the government. My grandmother and her four small children were left to die. Thankfully they survived but all they could do was survive. Their hope was to leave the Marxist country where people were persecuted for having faith in anything but the government. My father was sent to the gulag and my uncle was killed because of their faith and refusal to believe that the gov...

‘I’m glad President Trump was OK’: Colorado Republicans react to second assassination attempt

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice The second attempted assassination of former President Donald J. Trump in as many months on Sunday drew the ire and well-wishes by many on the political right in Colorado. "I’m glad President Trump was OK, and I’m thankful for the law enforcement that have detained the shooter," Gabe Evans, the Republican nominee for the 8th Congressional District, wrote on Twitter/X. Mr. Trump was five holes into a golf round at Mar-a-Lago in West Palm Beach, Fla., when the muzzle of a long gun was noticed through the shrubbery, about 400 yards away, according to media reports. Though initially described as an AK-47 rifle, court documents Fox News reviewed detail the long gun was an SKS-style long gun. On Fox News, Sen. Lindsey Graham received a call from Mr...

Devotional: Which tree will you choose? Life or death?

By Drake Hunter | Devotional, Rocky Mountain Voice Let’s chat about something that should be prioritized: getting in tune with God’s wisdom (Proverbs 3). Picture this: the world is like a sneaky influencer, whispering sweet nothings that can lead us astray without realizing it. But fear not (Matthew 10:28)! The remedy is as straightforward as this discussion. Those who embrace God’s wisdom are snacking on the divine delights of “The Tree of Life,” while those who get caught up in worldly wisdom are munching on “The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil”—a tree that, let me tell you, is not as innocent as it sounds (Tree of Death). It carries the weight of serious baggage, leading us to death. Let's be mindful of these dangers and choose our sources of wisdom wisely. If this tree ...

Ganahl: Colorado’s ties to Kamala’s lies about later term abortion

By Heidi Ganahl, Commentary | Rocky Mountain Voice One of Kamala Harris’s most glaring falsehoods during the recent presidential debate was her dismissal of Donald Trump’s claim that abortion is legal and on demand at any point during pregnancy in some states. Harris confidently declared, “Nowhere in America is a woman carrying a pregnancy to term and asking for an abortion. That is not an abortion. That is not happening.”  But the truth is, it *is* happening—right here in Colorado. The radical position of “abortion until birth” was on full display as Harris, much like our Colorado Governor Jared Polis, defended unrestricted access to abortion without acknowledging the serious ethical and moral implications of late-term procedures. Her VP pick Walz is just as r...

Shape the future of energy: AGNC survey calls for community voices in Northwest Colorado

By Jen Schumann | Contributor, Rocky Mountain Voice As Colorado’s coal plants close and the state pivots to new energy solutions, the future of Northwest Colorado’s economy hangs in the balance. The Associated Governments of Northwest Colorado (AGNC) is leading an effort to ensure rural communities play a central role in shaping this transition. At the heart of this initiative is a public survey, open through September 16, 2024, giving residents the chance to voice their preferences on energy sources and help guide the region's future. With coal once providing stable jobs and affordable energy, the challenge now is to identify new paths that protect both livelihoods and local economies. Building on strong foundations The Northwest Colorado Energy Initiative (NCEI), operating...

Colorado conservatives face get-out-the-vote gap as election looms

By Heidi Ganahl | Rocky Mountain Voice With just over 50 days remaining before a critical election, Colorado's conservatives are grappling with a major organizational gap in their get-out-the-vote (GOTV) efforts. Internal battles over leadership have left the state party in limbo, while national political grassroots groups—typically a key source of support—are largely absent. Despite some outside help for two congressional races, the lack of coordinated efforts has left conservative activists and volunteers across Colorado asking: How can they make a difference with so little time left? This disconnection comes at a frustrating moment for many conservative voters, who feel that Colorado’s increasingly blue voting trends have diminished the state’s role in national elections. Without ...

Devotional: Embracing a consistent faith to find true sanity

By Drake Hunter | Commentary, Rocky Mountain Voice As I represented Rocky Mountain Voice at the Colorado State Fair, I was blessed to encounter a rich tapestry of perspectives and viewpoints. This experience prompted me to reflect on the importance of maintaining a rational and profound approach to life. Some individuals skillfully juggle multiple roles and responsibilities, while others constantly shift their perspectives to fit various situations. This contrast highlighted the distinction between wisdom and instability, or even foolishness. The idea of continually changing one’s worldview felt similar to switching heads instead of hats— an exhausting endeavor that reflects a desire to meet whims, the expectations of others or the world. This brought to mind the image of the seve...

From communism to Colorado: Barbora Hurd’s call for freedom with Mesa County GOP Women

By Jen Schumann | Contributor, Rocky Mountain Voice At the Mesa County Republican Women's monthly luncheon, Barbora Hurd, originally from Czechoslovakia, shared what a childhood under Communism was like. It took her seven years to become a U.S. citizen, after marrying 3rd District U.S. House Republican nominee Jeff Hurd. For Barbora, living in a country where hard work leads to achieving dreams is worth fighting for. Living Under Communism Barbora recalled: “I was born and grew up behind the Iron Curtain. This meant that we, as citizens, had no freedom of speech or expression. No freedom of religion or worship. We had no free press. We were not free to move. And we had no freedom to assemble.” Hurd quoted Czech ex-president Vaclav Havel on life under communism: “Because the ...

Control of U.S. House likely to come down to 24 races, one of which is in Colorado

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice Control of the U.S. House of Representatives will most likely come down to an estimated 24 toss up seats in November, according to the Cook Political Report ratings. Only one of those seats is in Colorado: the battleground 8th District pitting incumbent Democrat Yadira Caraveo against Republican Gabe Evans. Last week, Evans collected the support of the Libertarian who was in the race, which could mean a 2-3% swing in the outcome. The race was rated "even" prior to the announcement by the Cook Political Report. If Evans can win the seat, it would provide Republicans with a "plus-one" in the U.S. House. It would also likely give Republicans a split of Colorado's congressional delegation. In order to control the U.S. House, a party must hold at ...
