America is at ‘critical crossroad’ U.S. Rep. Jason Crow says from DNC

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice As his party convenes in Chicago to officially select the presidential ticket of Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, Rep. Jason Crow told Fox 31 News he sees the country at a "critical crossroad". "This is a conversation about where we want to go," the Colorado congressman said of the Democratic National Convention in the interview with Fox 31 News. He also discussed his role as the Democratic ranking member on the U.S. House task force related to the assassination attempt on former President Donald J. Trump. "There is no place for political violence in the United States," he said. "We can disagree, but you do not get to attempt to assassinate a President in the United States of America." Crow is being opposed in the general election by former ...

Evans accepts four debates in 8th District U.S. House race, asks Caraveo to do the same

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice Gabe Evans has accepted four debate invitations in Colorado's 8th District race for the U.S. House. The Republican has agreed to appear in debates presented by CBS, 9News, Fox31, and Colorado Politics. “Two years ago, [8th District] voters only got to observe one, 30-minute debate in the race for Congress. Voters deserve better,” Evans said in a statement. “There are tremendous differences between [Democrat] Yadira Caraveo and me on crime, the border, jobs and the cost of living. As candidates for Congress, we owe it to the voters to articulate and explain our positions on these and other important issues." Evans served 12 years in the U.S. Army and Colorado Army National Guard as a Black Hawk helicopter pilot and company commander. He dep...

Constas: Colorado’s property tax crisis, the partisan divide driving the state’s housing affordability crisis

By James Constas | Commentary, Rocky Mountain Voice Homeowners across Colorado with mortgages are opening their annual escrow analyses and facing a shocking reality. I am one of them.  To my dismay, I discovered my mortgage will increase by a staggering $1,000 per month. This 54% surge in my monthly payment was driven by soaring property taxes and an even more exorbitant rise in homeowner's insurance premiums. Astonishingly, I now pay more towards taxes and insurance than towards the principal and interest on the property! Outraged, I shared my escrow analysis on X (formerly known as Twitter), where it garnered 887 likes, 263 retweets, and over 24,000 views in just 24 hours, clearly striking a chord. The 72 comments came from fellow homeowners sharing their fiscal misery and ...

Biden, Hillary Clinton to highlight first night of DNC speakers; ‘Squad’ member AOC to also speak

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice President Joe Biden will highlight the speakers on the opening night of the Democratic National Convention. He was expected to be the Democrats' nominee for president, until a month ago, when he abruptly announced his decision not to accept the nomination. Some have called it a political coup, removing the nominee for Vice President Kamala Harris, who did not go through the primary process. The Democratic National Convention in Chicago will be broadcast nightly from Aug. 19-22 on most major news networks. "[Biden] sees it as an important moment to talk directly, not just to the party, the Democratic Party and delegates, but also, obviously, to the American people," said White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre. The opening night o...

New era of tough-on-crime policy and support of police would be implemented by Advance Colorado measures

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice In a matter of days, two proposed initiatives by Advance Colorado could be referred to the ballot, featuring widely supported concepts to make communities safer and better fund police training, recruitment and retention, proponents say. The propositions concern eligibility for parole and lengthening time served for violent criminals, and funding some police activities specific to training, recruitment and retention through the state's general fund. Both are awaiting the final step of signature verification to reach the ballot. "People really like the idea of making sure violent criminals stay in jail," Advance Colorado President Michael Fields told Sean Duffy on 'Advance Colorado's Rundown'. "These are second-degree murderers and rapists. The...

Devotional: Embracing responsibility is a legacy to remember

By Drake Hunter | Devotional, Rocky Mountain Voice A soul without a well-established aim (purpose) loses itself. That's who I was when I first met Richard G. Madsen more than 38 years ago. Richard, my father-in-law, passed away on July 6, 2024. It's challenging to capture the essence of Richard in a single word –- loving, caring, loyal and so much more come to mind. Yet, if I had to choose just one word, it would undeniably be “RESPONSIBLE!” He embodied responsibility in a way that transformed my life, guiding me from a sense of aimlessness to a place of purpose, allowing me to relish life alongside his remarkable daughter, Sherrie. Witnessing Richard's life provides a living example of responsibility and its practical application in everyday life. His exemplary conduct served ...

As Aurora police monitor potential protest Saturday, questions persist as to Venezuelan gang’s infiltration of city

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice Aurora police are monitoring whether an "international day of protest" Saturday related to the Venezuelan presidential election might lead to protests in Aurora, they posted this week on Twitter/X. "We want our community to know we are actively monitoring the situation due to recent events in our city," the APD post reads. Aurora police also monitored a large assembly of people on the night of the Venezuelan election, July 28, near Havana Street and Mississippi Avenue, which some detail became lawless. As many commented in response to Aurora police on X, the "recent events" were criticized by some in the media as far-right conspiracy with claims of the events not occurring. One of those involves disagreement on the reason an apartment comp...

‘It’s crucial that we work together’: House Republican leaders call for bipartisan cooperation in special session

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice When Gov. Jared Polis called on Thursday for a special session of the 74th State Legislature, he specifically noted the need for bipartisan efforts toward property tax solutions for Coloradans. It is crucial those words are reflected in actions of the majority party, leaders of the House Republicans said in a joint media statement. Republicans face a superminority in the Colorado House -- only 19 of the 65 members are Republican -- which often meant during regular session their bills are killed in committee and their voices muted. "The majority party has had multiple opportunities to work with us on a solution," said Assistant Minority Leader Ty Winter. "Instead, their delays and dysfunction have led to a rushed process that could have been a...

Gov. Polis calls 74th Legislature into special session to address property tax

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice A deal has been reached to remove two qualified property tax initiatives from the fall ballot in exchange for a special session of the 74th Colorado Legislature to address property tax. Gov. Jared Polis called the special session in an executive order Thursday morning. The single-item call on property tax will convene at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 26, his order reads. In order for a special session of the legislature to be called, it must be deemed to be an emergency, or as his order calls it, an "extraordinary occasion". The special session may only include those items in the call, in this case specifically property tax. "Coloradans continue to be burdened by increasing property taxes and need reliability in the amounts they will pay in future ...

Following anti-gun session, bipartisan 2nd Amendment Caucus is being formed by Reps. Armagost, Bottoms

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice If state Reps. Ryan Armagost and Scott Bottoms are successful, their newly-formed House caucus will have bipartisan membership and strive to support, promote and protect gun rights for all Coloradans. The intent of the 2nd Amendment Caucus in the Colorado House is to create policy, ensuring the 2nd Amendment rights enshrined in the U.S. Constitution are upheld, while prioritizing firearm safety and education, a statement reads. "Firearm safety and education should not be a partisan issue," Bottoms said in a press release. "Our goal is to ensure that all Coloradoans are knowledgeable and safe when it comes to firearm ownership. The Colorado 2nd Amendment Caucus will serve as a platform for collaboration and understanding, transcending party li...
