Alert: Meeting converted to rally in Brighton at 9 a.m.

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice A meeting which could have led to the removal of the Colorado Republican Party's chairman and possibly other leadership, and the election of a new chairman, was cancelled late Friday night. It has been converted into a rally for conservative causes. The rally is at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 27, at Brighton's Harvest Fellowship Church, 11401 E. 160th Ave. The notice of the rally appears as if no discussion of the prior meeting's purpose will take place. It indicates those who had expressed interest in running for chairman in March's re-organizational meeting will speak. Those persons could be Eli Bremer, Richard Holtorf, Brita Horn, Jay Misary and Steve Peck. The rally will also include presentations from Protect Kids Colorado, Colorado Life In...

Colorado GOP faces transparency issues amid critical race controversies

By Rocky Mountain Voice Staff Amidst ongoing internal conflicts and strategic disputes, the Colorado Republican Party faces significant challenges concerning transparency and the manner in which it communicates its support for certain electoral races. The party leadership has outlined a list of "critical races," including several congressional districts and state legislative seats, such as CD3, CD8, SD5, SD6, SD12, HD43, HD16, HD19, HD25, HD26, HD50, HD57, SD13, and SD16.  This list of races targeted for strategic support in the upcoming elections was never formally communicated to many within the party, including some county chairs and leadership. This list was only discovered indirectly through the likes of concerned candidates.  Financial reports also reveal a concern...

Two new ballot initiatives, for parole eligibility and school choice, submit signatures to secretary of state

By Deborah Grigsby | Colorado Politics Two more initiatives vying for a spot on the November ballot have submitted signatures to the Secretary of State. One would delay parole eligibility for violent offenders and the other, an amendment to the state constitution would guarantee parents the right to direct their children’s education. Proposition 112, also known by its unofficial title as Concerning Eligibility for Parole would require any person convicted and sentenced for second degree murder, first degree assault, first degree kidnapping unless the first degree kidnapping is a class 1 felony, first degree arson, first degree burglary, or aggravated robbery, committed on or after July 1, 2004, but before Jan. 1, 2025, to serve 85% of the sentence imposed before being eligible for...

Brita Horn announces bid for chair of the Colorado GOP

Brita Horn, a well-known leader in Colorado politics, has announced her candidacy for the chair position of the Colorado Republican Party. The move comes as part of a broader effort to steer the party in a new direction, following a period of controversy and internal conflict under the current leadership, according to her announcement. Horn's journey into public service began with a defining moment on Sept. 11, 2001, which ignited her passion for volunteerism and community leadership. Rooted deeply in her Christian values, Horn has dedicated her life to serving others. She played a pivotal role in establishing the Rock Creek Volunteer Fire Department in McCoy, Colo., where she serves as the fire chief. El Paso County GOP chair Vickie Tonkins leads censure against party’s vice chair, demands he resign

By Ernest Luning | Colorado Politics The quarrel between Colorado Republican Party Chairman Dave Williams and a group of Republicans attempting to oust him from his position spilled over into local party politics this week when the El Paso County GOP's governing board voted to reprimand the party's second-in-command for spearheading the move to fire Williams, among other alleged "malicious acts." Add it to a growing pile of contradictory censure resolutions, disputed party meetings, dueling cease and desist orders, lawsuits both filed and threatened, and daily accusations that the other side is engaging in "illegal" activities — all part of a months-long struggle for control of the Colorado GOP. It could come to a head Saturday at a church in Brighton, when members of the sta...

Legality of Colorado’s campaign donation limits to be tested by case with Greg Lopez as lead plaintiff

By Sandra Fish | The Colorado Sun A federal court judge will decide after the Nov. 5 general election whether Colorado’s state political donation limits for candidates are legal. In a trial that concluded Tuesday, three Republicans are challenging the limits enacted by voters in 2002 claiming they violate the First Amendment by limiting donors’ freedom of speech. They sued Secretary of State Jena Griswold in 2022 seeking to overturn the limits, though Senior U.S. District Court Judge John Kane rejected their attempt to suspend the limits immediately. Kane on Tuesday ordered attorneys for the plaintiffs, who work for the national nonprofit Institute for Free Speech, to file a summary of their case by Sept. 23. The Colorado Attorney General’s Office must file a response by Oct....

Merger between Kroger, Albertsons on hold until Denver court rules on state lawsuit

By Maddie Rhodes | Fox 31 News The Kroger and Albertsons merger has been put on pause until Denver’s district court rules on the lawsuit brought on by the state of Colorado. The two grocery store chains announced their plans to merge, however, this was met with much controversy as many said this would create a monopoly. In February, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission sued to block the $24.6 billion merger between the grocery chains, saying the lack of competition would lead to higher grocery prices and lower wages for workers. Prop. 108, the ‘Citizens’ Tax Cut’ plan, could be headed to the ballot with nearly 200k signatures

By Marissa Ventrelli | Colorado Politics A ballot initiative to reduce property tax assessment rates has received enough signatures to qualify for the November 2024 ballot, its sponsors announced Tuesday.  Proposition 108, also known as the Citizens' Tax Cut, has submitted nearly 200,000 signatures to the Secretary of State's Office, exceeding the required threshold by over 75,000. The signatures will now undergo a verification process to ensure their validity. Backed by Advance Colorado and Colorado Concern, Proposition 108 aims to reduce assessment rates to 5.7% for residential properties and 24% for commercial properties. If passed alongside Constitutional Amendment 50, which is also on the ballot this November, Proposition 108 would cut this year's tax increase and limit ...

By Thelma Grimes | Colorado Politics If asked, Gov. Jared Polis said he would seriously consider becoming the vice-presidential candidate behind Vice President Kamala Harris, who is working to secure the official Democratic nomination for president in 2024. After President Joe Biden officially dropped out of the race on Sunday, he endorsed Harris to take his spot as the Democratic presidential candidate. The change led to more discussion about who could be her running mate. Polis joked about the prospect during the Monday morning interview with CNN’s Dana Bash, saying he would consider it if called while noting that he loves the work he is currently doing in Colorado. Colorado’s Democratic convention delegates throw support behind Kamala Harris as party’s nominee

By Ernest Luning | Colorado Politics Many of Colorado's leading Democratic elected officials and others who will have a say in picking the party's presidential ticket said Sunday that they support nominating Vice President Kamala Harris after President Joe Biden's historic decision to withdraw from the race less than four months before the November election. Harris drew endorsements from Colorado's governor, both of the state's U.S. senators and all five Democratic members of the state's U.S. House delegation within hours of Biden's announcement even as national Democratic Party officials made clear that replacing Biden at the top of the ticket would not amount to a coronation. Late on Sunday, state Democratic Party chair Shad Murib told Colorado Politics that he voted in favor of...
