‘This thing is a long way from decided’: Carville predicts one candidate will carry swing states

By Zach LaChance | Washington Examiner Democratic strategist James Carville predicted that the swing states in the 2024 election will nearly all go to one candidate, rather than either former President Donald Trump or Vice President Kamala Harris narrowly winning the majority of them. Speaking on CNN, Carville was asked, “If it’s the economy, stupid,” why Harris isn’t ahead in the presidential race after recent positive economic news, including declining inflation and a stronger-than-expected jobs report. “You know, she’s slightly ahead. It’s not the election. These things tend to break one way or the other at the end. There’s seven swing states. The least likely result is they break 4-3. But I can’t stop the commentariat from saying it’s going to be ...

Can you stop calls and texts from political campaigns? Here’s the rules.

By Samantha Jarpe | Fox 31 News If you have received a political text or call in recent weeks, you may be wondering how to make it stop, or what you can do to prevent them in the future. One thing that you may have heard of is the “National Do Not Call Registry,” which is an opt-in list created and run by the federal government. Registered telemarketers are legally not allowed to contact anyone on this list for sales purposes, and can face heavy fines for ignoring it. There is one notable exception: Political calls and texts. This means that campaigns or affiliated groups can contact people through calls or texts regardless of whether they consented to it, according to the Federal Communications Commission. Domenech: Kamala Harris embraces a Liz-Cheney-sized mistake

By Ben Domenech | Commentary, The Spectator Welcome to Thunderdome. Liz Cheney is campaigning with Kamala Harris today in Wisconsin at Ripon, known as the birthplace of the Republican Party at the Little White Schoolhouse. It was there in 1854 at a church meeting that Whig and Free Soil Party members gathered to form a “great irresistible Northern party, organized on the single issue of the non-extension of slavery.” This was even then pretty aggressive language for the Episcopalian who called the meeting, but not for Horace Greeley, who publicized it to the nation. Whatever Liz Cheney says today about how important it is to elect Kamala Harris will no doubt equal the historical significance of that moment, at least according to Rachel Maddow. But I’m here to tell you that thi...

[UPDATED] Former Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters given 9-year sentence by judge

By Lindy Browning | Contributor, Rocky Mountain Voice Judge Matthew Barrett has sentenced Tina Peters, once the Mesa County clerk and recorder, to serve eight and a half years in prison with the Department of Corrections, and six months in the Mesa County Jail as a result of being found guilty on various election charges related to her former capacity. In a scathing rebuke of her defiant behavior after a guilty conviction, Barrett listed all the reasons that probation was not a possibility for Peters: “You are no hero… Yes, you are a charlatan… Incarceration is appropriate when a person is a danger to us all, by sword or by pen,” he said from the bench. Peters' attorney, Michael Edministor, asked the judge to consider a probated sentence, considering his client had exhibited a his...

Oppose Amendment K: Modify constitutional election deadlines

By Editorial Board | Editorial, Rocky Mountain Voice Ballot language: Shall there be an amendment to the Colorado Constitution concerning the modification of certain deadlines in connection with specified elections? How it reached the ballot: Senate Continuing Resolution 24-002, supported by a 61-1 vote of the House and 34-0 vote of the Democrat-controlled Senate. Background: This bipartisan measure simply seeks to provide an extra week of time for the secretary of state to meet election deadlines. The bill summary cites the deadline for military and overseas ballots as reasoning for the additional time. The measure would shorten an initiative petitioner's time by a week, and shorten a referendum petitioner's time to file following a session by a week. It amends the timeline for t...

Colorado Democratic candidate spends campaign money on hair, clothes, makeup

By Marianne Goodland | Colorado Politics Is Democratic candidate Vivian Smotherman, who's running for one of Colorado's hottest state senate seats, violating Colorado's campaign finance laws and regulations? Smotherman has used more than $1,000 of campaign contributions to pay for clothes, hair styling and a consultant (who's also the hairstylist) on her appearance. The state's campaign finance manual doesn't specifically prohibit a candidate from spending campaign contributions on hair and clothes. Still, it states candidates "may not use contributions for personal purposes not reasonably related to the election of the candidate." The manual's only specified language on permissible use of campaign contributions for personal use is for child or dependent care. READ THE FULL STO...

(Neutral) Amendment J: Repealing the definition of marriage in the Constitution

By Editorial Board | Editorial, Rocky Mountain Voice Ballot language: Shall there be an amendment to the Colorado Constitution removing the ban on same-sex marriage? How it reached the ballot: Senate Continuing Resolution 24-003, originally titled "Protecting the freedom to marry". This partisan legislation split upon party lines, being supported by a 46-14 vote of the Democrat-controlled House and 29-5 vote of the Democrat-controlled Senate. Background: Presently, Section 31 of the Colorado Constitution regarding marriage reads: "Only a union of one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in this state." This measure repeals the language, currently read to restrict same-sex marriage. The summary page of SCR 24-003 correctly notes that since 2015 the U.S. Supr...

Thousands of noncitizens removed from voter rolls, dozens of lawmakers want answers from Garland

By Adam Shaw | Fox News Dozens of lawmakers in the House and Senate are calling for more information from the Justice Department about efforts to stop noncitizen voting in federal elections, which they call a "serious threat" to election integrity, citing officials in multiple states who have identified noncitizens on their voter rolls. A letter from 73 lawmakers, led by Sen. Bill Hagerty, R-Tenn., and Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., sent to Attorney General Merrick Garland said they were "deeply concerned" by reports of noncitizens registering to vote and voting in federal elections and had not received a response from an inquiry in July on the matter. "As of today, there has been no response from you or your Department regarding the inquiry on July 12, 2024, seeking information on ef...
